Dialect-taking back their control with the company of one another by Aissa Rose Gueye

The concept of this shoot derives from the term ‘Double Consciousness’ coined in W.E.B. Du Bois’ THE SOULS OF BLACK FOLK. The term refers to the way black individuals – in this case black women – look at themselves through the eyes of mainstream white society. We are seen as the ‘other’ and negotiate with this outside gaze within ourselves – continuously looking for inner peace and self-understanding. Here, the camera acts as a gaze, the two models in a dance with it – vulnerable and powerful – they are taking back their control with the company of one another – with black female community.
